What is AUTISM?

  • Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills.
  • A disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. These signs all begin before a child is three years old
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder: a spectrum of psychological conditions characterized by widespread abnormalities of social interaction and communication as well as restricted interests and repetitive behavior.

What are the early signs of Autism?

  • Development delays by 30 months
  • Loses previous acquired abilities to say words or sentences
  • No eye contact
  • Lack of awareness for others' feelings.
  • Child does not respond to his/her name
  • Cannot explain what he/she wants
  • Intense and violent tantrums
  • Odd movement patterns
  • Fixation on things that can't seem to be moved on from
  • Unusual repetitive behavior
  • Limited interests in activities or play.
  • Unusual focus on pieces. (Younger children with autism often focus on parts of toys, such as the wheels on a car, rather than playing with the entire toy.)
